  • How do electronic vignettes work? - access to expressways in Austria
It is important to remember that the new electronic vignettes enter the vehicle's registration number into the computer system, and during the trip cameras verify that the vehicle has an active vignette while traveling on Austrian freeways and expressways.   • Vehicles that MUST have an e-vignette - types of vignettes in Austria

  • Vehicles over 3.5t GVW - vignettes for highways in Austria
The GO-Maut toll applies to vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tons, such as campers, trucks and vans, traveling on toll roads in Austria. The amount of the toll depends on the distance traveled (measured with a GPS transmitter), the number of axles of the vehicle, the time of day and the number of emissions.   • Vehicles exempt from having an e-vignette
    • Currently, all vehicles with Ukrainian license plates are exempt from buying a vignette and paying a stretch fee. In addition, vehicles transporting refugees within the framework of aid organizations are also exempt from buying stretch tickets to Austria and the obligation to have a vignette. These conditions also extend to trucks and vans.
Before starting the trip, it is necessary to fill out a toll exemption form, which is available online on the ASFINAG website at this link: Link to the form In addition, there are other vehicles exempted from the requirement to have a self-adhesive vignette or one in analog form:
  • Persons with disabilities who have a disabled person's card with the additional endorsement "Unjustified use of public transportation." At ASFINAG, you can get a digital free Austrian vignette for your vehicle, as long as the license plates are registered to the vehicle owner and meet the mentioned criteria. This exemption does not apply to vehicles from abroad!
  • Military vehicles in accordance with § 2 Z38KFG 1967.
  • Privileged vehicles in accordance with § 20(1)(d) and § 20(5) KFG 1967 (Note: The blue light of a privileged vehicle - a flashing light or warning light - must be attached to the vehicle in a visible place!)
  • Vehicles of the public security service, financial administration and prison service
  • Peacekeeping operations of international organizations in accordance with § 1 (7) Z1 of Federal Law Gazette No. 677/1977 (UN, SFOR, IFOR).
  • Validity period of vignettes - how to buy an electronic vignette?
    • The digital vignette is available for 1 day, 10 days, 2 months or 1 year.
    • 1-day vignette
The electronic Vienna 1-day vignette is valid for one calendar day. E.g., if an electronic 1-day vignette is purchased on July 10 at 15:07 for immediate use, then it will be valid from 15:07 to 23:59.If an electronic 1-day vignette is purchased on July 10 for July 15, then it will be valid on July 15 from 00:00 to 23:59.
    • 10-day vignette
A vignette for Austria for 10 days starts from the date specified in the order from 00:00 and lasts for 9 consecutive days, ending at 23:59 on the last day. If the vignette is ordered "from today", its validity period starts from the time of order processing and lasts for 9 consecutive days , ending at 23:59 on the last day.
    • Vignette for 2 months
It starts from the date specified in the order from 00:00, and lasts for 2 consecutive months, ending at 23:59 on the last day. If the vignette is ordered "as of today", its validity begins from the time of order processing and lasts for two consecutive months, ending at 23:59 on the last day.
    • Vignette for 1 year
The annual vignette is valid from the moment of purchase until 31.01. of the following year, i.e. a vignette purchased on 02.02.2024. or 16.06.2024 is valid until 31.01.2025.
  • Freeway vignettes Austria - 18 day grace period
Please note that if you purchase online directly from the website of the road operator in Austria as an individual, the electronic 2-month vignette and the electronic annual vignette are only valid from the 18th day. EXCLUSIONS
    There are several highways and expressways on which it is not mandatory to purchase a vignette online:
  • A1 Westautobahn freeway (from Walserberg border crossing to Salzburg-Nord), Land of Salzburg
  • A12 Inntalautobahn freeway (from Kiefersfelden border crossing to Kufstein-Süd), Land Tirol
  • Freeway A14 (from border crossing Hörbranz to Hohenems), Land of Vorarlberg The vignette exemption applies from Hörbranz to Hohenems, up to exit 23 Hohenems/Diepoldsau
  • A26 freeway (Linzer Autobahn - currently still under construction, including a new suspension bridge over the Danube), Upper Austria state. A digital vignette will not be required until the entire A26 highway is completed and connected to the A7 route.

If you drive on toll roads in Austria without a valid vignette, the service imposes a fine of the following amounts:
  • Passenger cars: 120 euros
  • Motorcycles: 65 euros
The fee for failure to purchase an e-vignette must be paid directly to a police officer during a roadside inspection. Drivers who refuse to pay the fee face a court notice and a fine of up to €3,000. A fine for failure to purchase an electronic vignette can also be delivered by mail, up to a year from the date of the offense. In such a situation, it is advisable to follow the instructions sent with the fine for failure to purchase a vignette.

Below is a short list of the most common offenses committed by Polish drivers:
  • speeding in built-up areas up to 20 km/h the fine is up to 60 euros
  • speeding above 40 km/h - from 140 euros
  • driving after drinking the fine is from 300 euros
  • using the phone while driving the fine is a minimum of 50 euros
